Making money online is definitely something that you can do, but you need to keep in mind that it isn’t going to happen overnight!
I know at one time or another we have all been tempted by those crafty salespeople promising us they had the secret to getting rich quick. Some of us may have even been suckered into buying their so-called program.
Don’t be embarrassed if you were one of the ones that got suckered. It happens. A lot. I’ll admit it. I’ve been pulled in by the temptation. And what a waste of money it was!
The simple fact is, creating an online business (or any business for that matter) takes time! How much time depends a lot on you, and the type of business you want to start.
We’ll talk about that. But first, I want to make sure I really hammer this point home…
Creating An Online Business Isn’t A Race!
Maybe you’ve heard the saying before that a business is more like a marathon than a sprint.
The get-rich-quick-scheme guys would have you believe that it can happen overnight. I think we all know that just isn’t going to happen.
About the only ways you are going to get rich overnight is if you win the lottery, or a rich uncle dies and leaves you everything.
There are people out there who have tempered their sales pitch to make it a little more believable. Instead of promising that you can start making $10,000 a week by next month, they tell you that you can start making $10,000 a MONTH by next month.
It sounds a little more believable, but it still isn’t likely to happen.
So they’ve taken their overnight promises, and turned them into the “sprint” promise. It’s still quick. A mad dash and the money will be there!
Except… Probably not!
The marathon comparison is a little closer.
We all know sprints are short and fast.
That just doesn’t work in business.
Marathons are long, and require a slower, steadier pace.
But it still isn’t a great analogy to make when talking about business.
Because it’s still a race.
Business isn’t a race. There is no set course. There is no defined finish line.
The best way to look at business is a journey. You will continue learning, growing, exploring. And when you think you’ve reached the finish line, guess what happens. You realize there’s still more you can do to make your business better.
But, just like that marathon or the crazy sprint, you need to start!
Your First Step, Choosing Your Direction
If you have done some research into making money online, you may have heard the word “niche”. And if that is the case, you may think I am jumping the gun (another race reference!) a little here.
Yes, a niche is a direction that you can take your business. But that’s not what I mean by choosing your direction.
When I say that choosing your direction is your first step, I mean the type of online business you want to build. Yes, there are many. They can be broken down into three main categories:
I’m not going to delve very deep into these at this point. I will be writing posts on both the sales and service options in the future. You can read this article if you want to look a little deeper into the advertising option.
For the time being, I’ll give you a quick overview of each.
Making money online with a business geared toward sales means that you will be providing your customers with an actual product. I know, mind-blowing right?!
This type of business usually has the highest startup costs. Why? Because in order to sell a product, you need to buy product. Whether you are buying a salable product at wholesale and selling it at retail, or buying raw materials and creating your own product, there are expenses associated with that.
The nice thing, these products could be literally ANYTHING!
Maybe you make wire jewelry. You could sell that.
Can you knit a sweater? Yup, that will sell, too.
Do you troll Amazon, Craigslist, or yard sales for incredible buys? Great! Sell those items!
Have you written an e-book? Plan on writing more? Those are also options.
Physical items you make. Physical items you buy. Digital products you create.
Whatever it is you want to sell, you can create an online business around it.
As it suggests, this type of business is geared toward serving some need. You won’t have to create a product or carry inventory, so the startup cost is generally lower than a sales-type business.
Again, with this type of business, there are many options.
Maybe you have a good eye for detail and like to read. You could offer proofreading and editing services.
Are you good at research and writing? You could be a ghostwriter, and write posts just like this one.
Are you very organized and like working with numbers? You might think about starting a bookkeeping business (take a look at this to learn more about getting started with bookkeeping)
There are countless services that you could provide completely online, and build a very successful business out of.
Yes, you can be an advertiser! Yes, companies will pay you to advertise their products and services! This is called affiliate marketing, and you can read more about it here.
A wonderful thing about this type of business is the startup costs are extremely low. Really all you need to get started is a website.
From there, you could take many different directions.
One is to contact companies directly to inquire about advertising for them. This can be a little time-consuming. And having to personally reach out and contact companies to inquire about advertising or offer ad space isn’t for everyone.
Alternatively, you can sign up to affiliate networks. These are basically databases of companies that are actively looking for advertising space. They could pay in several different ways. Some only pay if you send them a referal that actually turns into a paying customer. Others will pay just for sending traffic to their website. Obviously, they will pay more for a paying customer than they will just for traffic.
Also, you can advertise specific products. I’m sure you’ve seen websites with Amazon “Buy Here” buttons, right? Guess what… Those are affiliate links, and the site owner gets a commission if you make a purchase after clicking that button.
You’ve Got Your Direction, Now What?
Like I said at the beginning, business is a journey and you will continue learning, growing and exploring. Well, before you continue learning, you need to start learning.
Very few successful business owners just woke up one day and said, “Heck! I think I’ll start a business today!”
They had to figure out what their business what going to be. They had to figure out how they were going to start. They had to figure out what they didn’t know!
That is a very important step that is far too often overlooked. You know what you know, right? But how many of us are actively aware of what we DON’T know?
Take any of those three business directions above. I’m sure you thought of a few ideas when you read through them. Maybe you know how to make something. Perhaps there is a service you can provide. Maybe you have some advertising experience.
If you can make something, do you have any idea how to sell it? How about how to sell it online where millions of people could see it?
You can perform a service, but do you know how to get people to seek out your services?
You’ve got advertising experience and want to start an online ad business? Do you know how to build the website and find the affiliate programs and networks?
Understanding our strengths is a great thing. It gives us the confidence we need to get out there and try something.
But just as importantly, we need to be aware of our shortcomings. What we don’t know may not hurt us today or tomorrow, but it could bring everything crashing down around us next week.
You need to look at the whole picture before jumping in.
Consider this. Can you swim?
So jumping out of a boat is no big deal. You can swim to shore, right? After all, it’s just a boat in water, and you know how to swim. You’ll be fine.
Did you take a minute to see the whole picture? What if you look up and realize you’re a mile from shore? That’s a long swim!
The same thing goes for starting a business. You need to look at everything. Don’t let what you already know blind you to the things that you don’t know.
How Do You Know What You Don’t Know?
You play it smart, and ask people who DO know.
There is a lot of competition in the world of physical businesses, and many companies hold their trade secrets very close. They won’t share them with anyone, because it gives them an edge.
Things are a little different in the online world. Yes, there is still competition. If you want to sell your hand-painted glassware, there are others out there doing the same thing. But chances are, they will be willing to help you learn the ropes of getting your business going.
Why the difference?
Because when it comes to online business, the market is much bigger. Actually, it’s massive!
Consider hand-painted glassware, just to continue with the example. You see it in small stores all the time. Sometimes even in large stores. Well, those stores need to rely on people walking through the front door in order to sell their product. Chances are pretty good they aren’t going to tell the shop next door the trick to selling the same product, because they are competing for the same customers.
Well, if you want to sell hand-painted glassware online, and ask for help getting started, you will probably find people willing to give you that help. Yes, you will be competing for business. But you won’t be competing for customers. Your market doesn’t rely on peoole living nearby who can walk through the front door. Your market relies on people turning on their computer! That means that your market is literally the ENTIRE WORLD!
A little competition in a market that big isn’t a big deal.
Don’t believe me?
What are you reading right now? An article on making money online, right? I’m giving you tips. Guidance. Help.
I talked about selling online. I talked about providing services online. I talked about advertising online.
I DO all of those things!
I do them, and I’m willing to help you learn how to do them.
Is that enough proof that the online market is big enough that there are people in the know who are willing to help you get started? If not, look around some more. You will find plenty of websites devoted to online business startups.
I guarantee you, I’m not the only one. There are entire systems and platforms available to learn just about anything you want to know.
Learning Is Where Business Begins
Maybe it doesn’t need to be said, but I’m going to say it anyway. You can’t do something if you don’t know how.
There’s nothing wrong with saying that you don’t know how to do something.
And there’s no reason to let that lack of knowledge keep you from getting started.
All it takes is the desire to start, and the willingness to learn.
Are you ready to learn?
Because there is a training platform that can teach you what you need to know. The main focus of this platform is affiliate marketing (remember, that’s advertising), but it can work for anyone who wants to start making money online.
They start you off right at the beginning, going over the basics of how to make money online and how to build your own website. They continue by teaching you everything you could ever need to know about the affiliate marketing arena.
However, just because the focus is on affiliate marketing, doesn’t mean you can’t learn other things. There are over a million members on this platform, and their businesses are many and varied. And all of them are willing to help. They post tips, guides, and ideas all the time. There are live video trainings every week that go over different ways to make money with your website.
Sound interesting? You can read my review here.
But learning is just the beginning.
Making Money Online Is A Lifelong Journey
You can make money online, in many different ways. You just have to decide to make the jump, and learn how.
Once you set off on that path, you will be in for the journey of a lifetime that will last a lifetime.
You will constantly be learning and growing, even as your business and bank accounts grow.
Just remember to keep your expectations in check. It’s just like the tortoise and the hare. Slow and steady wins the race.
Oh, right! I said business isn’t a race.
Well, slow and steady lets you enjoy the adventure a whole lot more!
Take things slow.
And learn some more.
The more you learn, the more your business benefits.
Start small, because making money online gives you the chance to do that. Set small goals that gradually get bigger. Don’t start out looking to earn a million dollars! Start out aiming to make the FIRST dollar. Then aim for ten dollars. Then aim for $10/day.
Learn. Put it into practice. Be patient.
Your success will come… If you work for it.
